Chainsaw Man Part 2 – School Arc Explained (Full Spoiler Recap & Analysis, Vol. 1–19)

Chainsaw Man

Chainsaw Man Part 2, also called the “School Arc”, is the ongoing continuation of Tatsuki Fujimoto’s hit manga.
Instead of following only Denji, the story shifts to a new main character: Asa Mitaka, a gloomy high school girl who becomes the host of the War Devil.

Part 2 keeps all the blood, dark humor and twists of Part 1, but adds new layers of school drama, bullying, cults and the Four Horsemen devils.

⚠️ This article contains full spoilers for Chainsaw Man Part 2.

If you need a refresher on Denji, Makima and the events of Part 1, start with this recap:
Chainsaw Man Part 1 Recap & Guide – Story, Arcs, Characters and Themes Explained

What Is Chainsaw Man Part 2? (Quick Overview)

Chainsaw Man Part 2:

  • Is serialized on Jump+ (digital)
  • Takes place after the end of Part 1
  • Shifts the main POV to Asa Mitaka, not Denji
  • Focuses on school life, social anxiety, bullying, “justice,” and cults
  • Introduces the Four Horsemen more clearly: War, Famine, etc.

In Part 1, Denji joins Public Safety, fights devils and faces Makima, the Control Devil.
In Part 2, Denji tries to live as a “normal” high school boy… while a new heroine is being dragged into the devil world against her will.

Where Part 2 Fits in the Chainsaw Man Timeline

Part 2 begins some time after the end of Part 1:

  • Makima is dead
  • The Control Devil is reborn as Nayuta, living as Denji’s “little sister”
  • Denji is raising Nayuta while still secretly acting as Chainsaw Man

If you haven’t read or watched Part 1 yet, it’s best to start there and then come back:

  • Part 1 = Denji vs. Makima era
  • Part 2 = Asa & Yoru’s school arc, with Denji in the background

Asa Mitaka Dies and Becomes the War Fiend

Asa Mitaka is a lonely high school girl at Fourth East High School:

  • Her parents were killed by devils
  • She lives alone in a small apartment
  • She hates the current world where devils casually walk into classrooms
  • She keeps her distance from classmates, but deep inside wants friends

One day, jealousy and adult hypocrisy collide:

  • Asa’s class representative is secretly in love with their homeroom teacher
  • She feels Asa is “stealing” his attention by being the good student
  • The class rep contracts with the Justice Devil and attacks

Asa is killed in a brutal incident.
Just before her brain fully shuts down, an owl-like devil appears: the War Devil.

This devil:

  • Enters Asa’s corpse
  • Revives her as a fiend
  • Shares the body with Asa, alternating control
  • Calls herself Yoru when using Asa’s body

When Yoru is in control, scars appear across Asa’s face.

Yoru explains:

  • She is the War Devil, one of the Four Horsemen
  • She was defeated by Chainsaw Man in the past
  • Because of that, the concept of “war” itself has weakened, and she lost much of her power
  • Her goal is to make Chainsaw Man vomit back up all he “erased,” including nuclear weapons

Yoru has only one lead: Chainsaw Man is “hiding” at Asa’s school.
She leaves Asa’s consciousness intact and gives her a deal:

  • Help me find and defeat Chainsaw Man
  • If you disobey, I will erase your mind completely
  • If we succeed, I’ll return your body to you

Asa is forced to accept.
Because “War Devil” is too long to say, Asa suggests calling her Yoru, and the name sticks.

Denji’s New Life as a High School Student

Meanwhile, Denji is alive and attending the same school, Fourth East High:

  • He goes to high school
  • Works multiple part-time jobs
  • Still transforms into Chainsaw Man whenever devils appear

However, Denji’s motivation is hilariously simple:

He wants to become so famous as Chainsaw Man that when he reveals his identity, he’ll be insanely popular with girls.

This childish dream quickly becomes a political problem.

Hirofumi Yoshida, the cool octopus-contract devil hunter from Part 1, approaches Denji:

  • He now works for a secret organization
  • He warns Denji that Chainsaw Man’s power and popularity are becoming impossible to ignore
  • If Denji keeps showing off, governments may decide to lock him up or worse

Yoshida’s message:

“If you keep this up, I might be the one who has to capture you.”

Denji doesn’t care. He’s determined to live however he likes.

At the same time, there is a Devil Hunter Club at school, full of Chainsaw Man fans. Yoru orders Asa to join this club to get closer to the real Chainsaw Man.

Asa & Yuko – Bullying, “Justice” and Tragedy

In the Devil Hunter Club, Asa meets Yuko, a bright and friendly girl:

  • Same grade as Asa
  • Also lost her family to devils
  • Lives in a poor, old house
  • Is a big fan of Chainsaw Man

Yuko:

  • Notices Asa being bullied
  • Defends her even without knowing all the details
  • Becomes Asa’s first real friend

However, Yuko also has her own dark wishes:

  • She wants strength to live alone
  • She wants to punish the bullies who hurt Asa
  • She dreams of being a hero, like Chainsaw Man

These feelings lead her to make a dangerous contract with the Justice Devil, gaining the power to read minds and punish “evil.”

Yuko then:

  • Attacks the school
  • Slaughters students and teachers she judges as bad people or bullies
  • Becomes intoxicated by the feeling of “justice”

Asa, with Yoru’s help, tries to stop her. Asa’s new power lets her:

  • Turn “her possessions” into weapons
  • Use Yoru’s strength in combat

But Asa can’t fully control it, and she ends up seriously injuring Yuko.

Crying over her friend’s body, Asa feels overwhelming guilt.
At that moment, a mysterious girl named Kiga appears, calling Yuko her “sister.” Kiga casually says she’ll help and revives Yuko.

This makes things worse:

  • Yuko, with the Justice Devil’s power, becomes even more monstrous
  • She grows larger, destroys the school and rampages outside
  • Asa and Yoru can’t stop her anymore

Chainsaw Man appears and cuts Yuko down.

Later, half-crippled and weakened, Yuko secretly visits Asa’s apartment to apologize and say goodbye:

  • She confesses what she did
  • She says she will leave town and go to a distant relative who is a devil hunter
  • The two girls say a bittersweet farewell as friends

But as soon as Yuko leaves, she is suddenly cut apart by someone who looks like Chainsaw Man, but is not Denji.
This “fake Chainsaw Man” becomes one of the arc’s biggest mysteries.

The Aquarium Date and Trapped Devil Incident

Image Credit :Tatuki Fujimoto 藤本タツキ/Shueisha 集英社

Trying to control Denji, Yoshida decides on a strange plan:

“If Denji gets a girlfriend, maybe he’ll calm down and stop transforming for attention.”

He arranges for Asa and Denji to meet through the Devil Hunter Club.

The problem:

  • Denji is crude, selfish and shameless
  • Asa is serious, awkward and easily disgusted

They immediately clash and have a big fight.

Meanwhile, Yoru is testing the limits of her power. She realizes:

  • She can turn her “possessions” into weapons
  • For humans, “my possession” can mean “someone who loves me”
  • The more guilt Asa feels, the stronger the weapon becomes

So Yoru orders Asa:

“Get a best friend or a lover, then turn them into a weapon. The guilt will make it strong.”

Asa is horrified at the idea of sacrificing someone she cares about.
But then she thinks of Denji, who she currently dislikes, and decides:

“If it’s that idiot, I can probably do it.”

She invites Denji on a date at the aquarium.

Denji is thrilled, dreaming of romance. However:

  • The Devil Hunter Club seniors join the outing
  • The aquarium is actually under the control of a devil
  • They are trapped in an endless aquarium loop with no exit

The seniors fall into despair as food runs out and the same corridor repeats infinitely.
Asa, gradually, starts to open up to Denji. They fight together:

  • Asa uses creative thinking with Yoru’s weapon power
  • Denji’s stubborn determination keeps everyone moving

The two manage to cooperate and defeat the devil, escaping the aquarium.

Their relationship softens slightly after surviving death together.

Yoru senses Asa’s growing attachment to Denji and decides it’s time to weaponize him. But when she tries, the ability fails. For some reason, Denji cannot become a weapon.

To make things more complicated, Nayuta, the reincarnated Control Devil living as Denji’s little sister, appears:

  • She becomes jealous of Asa
  • She uses her control powers to alter memories
  • Asa and Denji’s fragile bond is partially reset

The Chainsaw Man Church and Global Riots

Image Credit :Tatuki Fujimoto 藤本タツキ/Shueisha 集英社

The mysterious schoolgirl Kiga is revealed to be the Famine Devil, one of the Four Horsemen and Yoru’s “sister.”

Kiga’s goal is different from Yoru’s personal revenge:

  • A terrifying, world-ending devil will appear in the future
  • Kiga wants Chainsaw Man and the War Devil strong enough to fight it
  • To do this, she must increase humanity’s fear of chainsaws and war

Her answer is the World Peace Chainsaw Man Church:

  • A cult-like organization that worships Chainsaw Man as a god
  • Recruits many young people around the world
  • Secretly turns believers into “weapon humans” through devil contracts

Asa and Yoru are drawn into the church:

  • They become its public faces and “mascots”
  • Asa gains sudden popularity as a sort of Chainsaw Man idol
  • Under the surface, the church prepares something far darker

Public Safety plans to use the real Chainsaw Man (Denji) to take down the church in a single operation.
But Kiga and her ally Barem Briche (a fire-spewing weapon human) have already hijacked the plan.

Before the sting can happen, Kiga’s real operation starts:

  • Many believers gain the ability to transform into Chainsaw-Man-like forms
  • At a prearranged moment, they begin riots and massacres worldwide
  • Chainsaw-shaped monsters attack civilians across the globe

This causes:

  • Exploding fear of chainsaws
  • Rising terror of war and mass violence
  • A huge boost in power for Chainsaw Man and the War Devil

In the chaos:

  • Asa and Yoru fight desperately to survive
  • Denji loses his beloved dogs
  • Ignoring all warnings, Denji transforms into Chainsaw Man and throws himself into the battle

He cuts through countless enemies, but eventually collapses.
In the confusion, he is separated from Nayuta, and he has no idea whether she is alive.

Chainsaw Man Capture and Rescue Mission

After the worldwide terror incident, days pass.

Denji has become too dangerous and too famous.
Public Safety finally acts:

  • Denji is captured
  • Sedated with drugs
  • Sent to a devil containment facility
  • Slowly dissected and disposed of while unconscious

Meanwhile, Asa is approached again by Kiga.

Kiga tells her:

“To save Chainsaw Man, you must be the one to kill him.”

Her twisted logic: the only way to free him from endless suffering and political control is to let him die as a legend, not as a prisoner.

Asa’s feelings have changed:

  • Chainsaw Man saved her before
  • She now admires and even loves him
  • She knows the world will never allow him a normal life

Still, she accepts the mission, even knowing it may cost her life.

Together with Kiga, Asa infiltrates the devil containment center:

  • She reunites with members of the Devil Hunter Club
  • She teams up with Samurai Sword and other weapon humans, who also want a piece of Chainsaw Man
  • They fight their way through Public Safety’s defenses, including Quanxi, the legendary devil hunter, who is forced to obey because her lover is taken hostage

At last, they find the dissected body of Chainsaw Man.
In that moment, Asa realizes the truth: Chainsaw Man is Denji, the boy she went on that awkward aquarium date with.

They manage to escape with him and hide in a safe house prepared by Kiga.

Nayuta’s Disappearance and Barem’s Plan

Denji finally wakes up in Kiga’s hideout, surrounded by:

  • Asa & Yoru
  • Samurai Sword
  • Several weapon humans and devil hunters with conflicting motives

Yoru and Samurai Sword both want a rematch with Chainsaw Man. They try to pressure him into fighting them.

But Denji is mentally broken:

  • He lost his dogs
  • He lost his home
  • He doesn’t know where Nayuta is or if she’s alive

He can’t think about glory or battles. He just wants to know if his family is safe.

The group travels to Denji’s old apartment. They find:

  • The building completely burned down
  • No sign of Nayuta
  • No evidence she survived or died

Denji collapses emotionally:

“Trying to be popular as Chainsaw Man just brought misery. I dragged Nayuta into my mess too.”

Yoru, frustrated with his self-pity, drags him into an alley and threatens to “neuter” him if he really wants to give up his desires.

In that narrow, intimate space, something unexpected happens:

  • Yoru remembers the time she tried to claim Denji as her weapon by kissing him
  • Influenced by Asa’s feelings, Yoru kisses Denji again

Asa, watching from inside their shared mind, is fully conscious of this:

She’s furious that Yoru used her body for the kiss and is convinced Denji now thinks she’s a creep.

The romantic/psychological triangle between Denji, Asa and Yoru becomes even more complicated.

Later, the group goes to a sushi restaurant to eat and plan their next move. There, they meet Barem Briche again.

Denji attacks Barem in anger, blaming him for everything.

Barem, however, reveals his true desire:

  • He wants to create the “perfect Chainsaw Man”
  • For that, Denji needs endless enemies and suffering
  • Barem loves watching Chainsaw Man fight and bleed, like a cruel fan watching his favorite show

To push Denji further into despair, Barem shows him something horrifying:

Nayuta’s severed head.

Exactly what Barem did and what it means is left ambiguous, but for Denji, it’s the worst possible nightmare.

This is roughly where the current chapters leave the story: with Denji’s heart in pieces and the future completely uncertain.

  • One of the Four Horsemen
  • Lost to Chainsaw Man in the past

  • Chainsaw Man fangirl

  • Student council president
  • Leader of the Devil Hunter Club
  • Obsessed with Chainsaw Man

Image Credit :Tatuki Fujimoto 藤本タツキ/Shueisha 集英社
  • Reincarnation of the Control Devil (Makima)
  • Adopted by Denji at the end of Part 1
  • Extremely intelligent and possessive

Denji works hard to:

  • Raise her as family

  • Save money to send her to university someday

Nayuta has no problem using her powers to rewrite memories, especially when she feels jealous.

The Justice Devil

  • Devil of “justice,” active around Asa’s school
  • Can read minds
  • Contracts with both the class rep and Yuko

The Justice Devil shows how the idea of “justice” can easily become self-righteous violence.

Kiga / Fami – The Famine Devil

Image Credit :Tatuki Fujimoto 藤本タツキ/Shueisha 集英社
  • Appears as a normal schoolgirl
  • Actually the Famine Devil, another Horseman
  • Calls Asa her “little sister”

She:

  • Revives Yuko “for fun” and to test Asa and Yoru
  • Manipulates events like the Chainsaw Man Church and world riots
  • Claims she is preparing Chainsaw Man and War to face a future, even worse devil

Her kindness and cruelty always hide a long-term strategy.

The Falling Devil

  • One of the strongest devils introduced
  • Sent by Kiga to attack Asa
  • Ability: make people’s minds and bodies “fall,” literally sending them into the sky

Even Yoru immediately admits they cannot win against the Falling Devil.
Chainsaw Man barely manages to oppose her, showing just how powerful she is.

Fumiko Mifune

Image Credit :Tatuki Fujimoto 藤本タツキ/Shueisha 集英社
  • Devil hunter from Public Safety Special Division 7
  • Assigned to guard Denji
  • Wears a school uniform as a disguise, but is actually 22 years old

  • Wants to be his friend
  • Dislikes seeing Asa used as a “fake” Chainsaw Man symbol that steals Denji’s spotlight

Barem Briche

Image Credit :Tatuki Fujimoto 藤本タツキ/Shueisha 集英社
  • Fire-thrower type weapon human
  • Vice president of the World Peace Chainsaw Man Church
  • Formerly controlled by Makima, now free

Barem:

  • Loves Chainsaw Man as a “show” more than as a person
  • Creates disasters so Chainsaw Man always has something to fight
  • Doesn’t care about Denji’s happiness, only his suffering and spectacle

He plays a huge role in Denji’s current tragedy and the fate of Nayuta.

Themes and Analysis – What Part 2 Is Really About

Loneliness, Bullying and “Normal Life”

Part 2 zooms in on the pain of everyday life:

  • Asa is crushed by bullying and social anxiety
  • Yuko is twisted by her desire to protect Asa and be “justice”
  • Denji tries to live a “normal” life but is too abnormal to ever truly blend in

The manga asks:

  • What does a “normal” life mean for people who have seen extreme violence?
  • Can someone like Denji ever be just another teenager?
  • How many ordinary students break under pressure before devils even appear?

War, Famine and the Four Horsemen

Part 2 also expands the cosmology of Chainsaw Man:

  • We see War (Yoru) up close
  • We meet Famine (Kiga/Fami)
  • We see hints of an even worse devil coming in the future

The Four Horsemen are not just bosses to fight – they represent huge, abstract fears: control, war, famine and more.

Fake Justice vs Real Responsibility

Through the Justice Devil and the Chainsaw Man Church, Part 2 explores:

  • How people use “justice” to excuse violence
  • How cults grow around a symbol like Chainsaw Man
  • How fans and believers can become more dangerous than the hero they worship

Chainsaw Man himself becomes a political and religious symbol, whether Denji likes it or not.
