Makima’s True Identity — The Control Devil

For much of the story, Makima’s nature is shrouded in mystery.
But it is eventually revealed that Makima is the “Control Devil,” the embodiment of humanity’s fear of domination.

As the Control Devil, she can manipulate anyone she considers beneath her, erasing their free will and forcing them to obey her commands.
Her famous phrase — “This is an order” — literally compels others into submission.

Even devils and fiends are not immune. Once she controls a person, she can also control the devils they’ve contracted with.

In Chapter 75, the President of the United States makes a terrifying statement:

“We must kill Makima—the Control Devil.”
He then sacrifices one year of every American citizen’s lifespan to summon the Gun Devil against her.

Why Can’t Makima Die?

Makima is shot in the head early in the manga—but in the next chapter, she’s alive and completely unharmed.
Her secret? A contract with the Japanese Prime Minister.

Whenever she’s killed or injured, the damage is redirected to random Japanese citizens, turning her into a pseudo-immortal being.
Her life is sustained by the deaths of others—an eerie and fitting trait for the Control Devil.

The Battle with the Gun Devil

When the resurrected Gun Devil attacks Japan, Makima confronts it head-on.
She summons and controls numerous devils—including the Angel Devil, Future Devil, Spider Devil, and Punishment Devil—through invisible chains.

In a few seconds, she unleashes overwhelming power, crushing the Gun Devil and turning its corpse into her puppet.
However, the Gun Devil possesses Aki Hayakawa’s body afterward, forcing Denji into a tragic battle that ultimately fulfills Makima’s cruel design.

Makima vs. Chainsaw Man (Denji)

After manipulating global events, Makima finally faces Chainsaw Man himself.
She commands an army of Weapon Hybrids and zombies, taunting Denji for not appearing as the “real” Chainsaw Man she admires.

Despite Denji’s desperate fight, Makima’s immortality and physical prowess overwhelm him.
She tears out his heart—believing victory is hers.

But Denji had a plan.

“Makima Set Meal” — Denji’s Unthinkable Counterattack

After the battle, a calm scene shows Denji in his apartment, opening his refrigerator. Inside are several plastic containers.

Because physical attacks couldn’t kill her, Denji decides to consume Makima, piece by piece.
This unconventional act bypasses her contract, as it’s not considered an “attack.”

Denji’s horrifying yet emotional decision reflects both his lingering affection and his need to end her tyranny once and for all.

Rebirth as Nayuta — The Next Control Devil

After Makima’s death, a young girl appears—Nayuta, the reincarnation of the Control Devil.
She no longer remembers her past life. Kishibe entrusts her to Denji, asking him to raise her as a normal human to prevent another Makima-like tragedy.

In Chainsaw Man Part 2, Nayuta lives with Denji as his “little sister,” symbolizing a chance for redemption.

Makima’s True Goal — “A Better World”

Makima claims her ultimate objective is to create a better world using Chainsaw Man’s power.

Chainsaw Man can “erase” devils—and with them, the very concepts they represent—from existence.
According to Makima, he has already erased horrors like Nazis, World War II, and AIDS from the world’s memory.

She dreams of using his power to erase all suffering—war, hunger, and fear itself.
However, her true desire seems more personal: to form equal relationships.

As the Control Devil, Makima can only relate to others through dominance and fear.
By removing fear from the world, she hopes people might love her—not as a god or master, but as an equal.

Why Didn’t Makima Control Denji?

Makima could control anyone she saw as “below” her—but not Denji.
That’s because she didn’t see Denji at all—she only saw Chainsaw Man.

Moreover, Denji’s heart (Pochita) protected him from her ability.
This is why she tried to break his spirit—killing his loved ones, Aki and Power—to shatter his humanity and sever his bond with Pochita.

Makima’s Abilities Explained

1. Control and Domination

Makima can control humans, devils, and even corpses she deems inferior, and use their abilities.

2. Animal Surveillance

She can eavesdrop through animals like rats, birds, and cats—spying on conversations across great distances.

3. Pressure Death Ritual

From afar, she sacrifices human lives to crush her targets to death by name—possibly the “Devil of Punishment”’s ability.

4. Invisible Gunfire

After controlling the Gun Devil, she can fire invisible bullets simply by forming her hand into a gun and saying “Bang.”

5. Regeneration via Human Substitution

Through her contract with the Japanese government, all fatal damage is redirected to citizens.

Makima’s Relationships

  • Denji – Her “pet” and the vessel of Chainsaw Man. She manipulates his love to reach Pochita.
  • Aki Hayakawa – A tool to emotionally destroy Denji; she turns him into the Gun Fiend.
  • Power – Initially part of Denji’s found family; later killed by Makima, then revived by Power’s blood to save Denji.

The Meaning Behind Her Name “Makima”

According to creator Tatsuki Fujimoto, Makima’s name comes from the Japanese word “Mama” (mother).
When you “cut” the Japanese word for “tree” (木 = ki) from chainsaw (チェーンソー), you get “Ma-Ma.”

This reflects Denji’s subconscious longing for maternal affection, not romantic love.
Makima embodies both the mother he lost and the authority he both fears and desires.

Conclusion

Makima is not just a villain—she is a tragic godlike figure longing for love and equality.
Her obsession with control and her pursuit of a “better world” lead to her downfall, yet her reincarnation as Nayuta hints that her story is far from over.

Chainsaw Man uses her character to explore power, love, and the impossibility of true connection between master and servant.
