⚠️ Spoiler Alert: This article contains spoilers for One Piece Chapter 1165 from Weekly Shonen Jump (released on November 4).
If you’re waiting for the English release or following only the anime, proceed with caution.

The True Story Behind the God Valley Incident

Chapter 1165 finally reveals what truly happened during the legendary God Valley Incident — the fierce battle between Roger and Garp versus Rocks D. Xebec.
Rocks, consumed by uncontrollable rage through Domi Reversi (Black Spot Control), loses all reason.
Seeing his torment, Roger and Garp join forces to stop him.

The two clash with overwhelming Conqueror’s Haki that shakes the island and beyond.
As the battle reaches its climax, Rocks cries out in despair.
Garp yells, “I understand your regret!!!”, while Roger, holding back tears, tells him, “Don’t cry, you fool…!!!” — a heartbreaking moment that moved many readers to tears.

Previously, Sengoku described the Rocks Pirates as “so divided that no one remained to speak of them.”
But this chapter reveals the truth: Roger, Garp, and Rocks shared a deep mutual respect as rivals of the same era.
They didn’t speak of Rocks’ end not because of hatred, but because of honor.

The World Government, however, found the outcome inconvenient.
Thus, the event was erased from history — replaced with a fabricated story that “Roger and Garp allied to protect the Celestial Dragons and their slaves.”
Even Sengoku likely only repeated what he was told from above.
At last, the true bond and tragedy behind the God Valley Incident have come to light.

Roger & Garp’s Legendary Alliance

(C)Eiichiro Oda 尾田栄一郎/Shueisha集英社

This chapter’s biggest emotional impact comes from seeing Roger and Garp fight side by side — both displaying traces of their future heirs, Ace and Luffy.

Roger’s attack, Hino Kagutsuchi Ei-su, literally contains Ace’s name (Ei-su → Ace), while Garp’s Infinitum Explosion mirrors Luffy’s Gomu Gomu no Gatling.
It’s as if the fathers’ spirits live on in their sons’ fighting styles.

During the fight, Roger casually tries to recruit Garp into his crew — but Garp declines, choosing his own form of justice.
This decision ties beautifully into the future moment when Garp would entrust Ace to Roger’s crew.
We also learn Garp’s true reason for staying in the Marines despite hating the government:
He stayed for the sake of his subordinates who joined believing in their own justice.
Thinking about how he now entrusts the next generation — like Coby — with that same will makes this moment even more emotional.

The Introduction of Polo Gram — Marco’s Father?

(C)Eiichiro Oda 尾田栄一郎/Shueisha集英社

Right after the fall of the Rocks Pirates, we see a new character who strongly resembles Marco appear before a young Whitebeard (Newgate) — his name is Polo Gram.
The name seems to be a play on Marco Polo.

A few chapters earlier (Chapter 1162), readers noticed a mysterious Marco-like figure amid the chaos of God Valley — it turns out that was Gram.
At the time, Marco was already seven years old.
Perhaps Gram and Marco traveled together, or maybe this meeting sparked the formation of the Whitebeard Pirates.
It’s possible Gram played a major role in why Marco would one day call Whitebeard “Oyaji” (Dad).
There’s clearly more drama to unfold from this encounter.

The Former User of the Horo Horo no Mi Revealed!?

(C)Eiichiro Oda 尾田栄一郎/Shueisha集英社

A small but exciting detail in this chapter is the brief appearance of a familiar-looking ghost — identical to Perona’s ghosts, though slightly different in shape.
Standing beside it is a man believed to be the previous user of the Horo Horo no Mi!

That man is revealed to be Gill Bastar, the protagonist of Eiichiro Oda’s debut work WANTED!, who was also previously mentioned in the SBS of Volume 112 as a former member of the Rocks Pirates.
While his devil fruit ability wasn’t specified then, Chapter 1165 seems to confirm it.

Final Thoughts

Chapter 1165 delivers a perfect blend of action, emotion, and lore expansion.
The truth of God Valley has finally been told — not just as history, but as a story of bonds, regret, and legacy.
With this chapter closing one of the greatest mysteries in One Piece, we can expect an entirely new phase to begin next week.
