Reze’s True Identity – A Hybrid of the Bomb Devil

Though Reze seems genuinely kind and affectionate toward Denji, her true identity is far from innocent.
She is a “Weapon Human”, just like Denji—someone who has fused with a devil. Her true mission is to steal Denji’s heart.

Reze has fused with the Bomb Devil, allowing her to transform by pulling the pin on her choker like a grenade.
Once transformed, she unleashes devastating explosions, using bombs and blasts in various creative ways to hunt Denji down.

A Soviet Spy with a Tragic Past

As the story unfolds, we learn that Reze has a heartbreaking background.
In the Soviet Union, there is a grim fairy tale told by mothers to discipline their children. It speaks of a secret room hidden in a military ammunition depot—filled with orphaned children packed tightly together. These children have no freedom, living and dying as tools of the state.

Such children, raised only to serve their country as living weapons, were called “guinea pigs.”
Reze was one of them.

Her smiles, her sweet words, even her affection toward Denji—all were part of her mission. She was a spy sent by the Soviet Union to retrieve Denji’s heart. Her exceptional combat skills and physical strength make sense when you realize she was trained from childhood to be a perfect weapon.

Reze’s Death – Killed by Makima

Reze meets a tragic end in Part 1 of Chainsaw Man.
She is ambushed and killed by Makima and the Angel Devil. Later, she is resurrected through Makima’s power and becomes a member of Public Safety’s Special Division 5, but she is eventually defeated again in battle against Chainsaw Man.

However, since Weapon Humans are essentially immortal, there’s still a possibility that Reze could return in Part 2.

Abilities – The Power of the Bomb Devil

Reze can transform into the Bomb Devil by pulling the pin on her neck, much like activating a grenade.
As the Bomb Devil, she can create explosions at will, using her body as a weapon. She can blow up her limbs to attack, release sparks to ignite blasts, and even detach body parts and control them before detonation.

Her only known weakness is that she cannot cause explosions underwater.

Reze’s combat power is terrifying—she killed several Public Safety agents and was feared even by the Typhoon Devil, a being of immense power.

Even without transforming, Reze demonstrates deadly hand-to-hand combat skills, strangling an assassin to death with her bare hands.
Despite her slender frame, her agility and combat instincts make her one of the deadliest characters in the series.

Inspiration and Symbolism Behind the Reze Arc

In an interview with a Japanese magazine, Chainsaw Man creator Tatsuki Fujimoto revealed that the Reze arc was inspired by the film Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade.
It is also believed that the design and abilities of the Bomb Devil (Bomb Woman) were modeled after Nanao Agawa, a character from the same film.

Toward the end of the arc, Reze receives a red gerbera from a charity donation box.
In the language of flowers, red gerberas symbolize “passion,” “endless challenge,” “positivity,” and “mysterious love.”
They are often given to people who are about to take a new step forward in life.

Interestingly, a single gerbera flower also carries the meaning “You are my destined one” or “love at first sight.”
This makes her final scene even more poignant—suggesting that her feelings for Denji may have been more sincere than her mission allowed her to show.

Why Didn’t Reze Pull the Pin at the End?

At the very end of her story, Reze hesitates to pull the pin on her neck—the trigger for her Bomb transformation.

While this may partly be due to Makima’s overwhelming presence or interference from the Angel Devil, many readers have offered deeper interpretations:

She didn’t want to risk hurting Denji and Cafe Master in the blast’s aftermath.

These interpretations highlight the human side of Reze, torn between duty and genuine emotion.
Her inability to pull the pin may symbolize her final act of resistance—the last spark of humanity in someone created to be nothing more than a weapon.
