Reze’s Profile (Quick Overview)

Reze is a character from Chainsaw Man. She works part-time at a café called “Futamiti” (Futamichi)★ — a name that hides important symbolism, which I explain in detail here:

In the story, she is the only girl Denji truly falls in love with — aside from Makima.

Profile

• Age: Unknown

• Height / Weight: Unknown

• Origin: Soviet Union

• Voice Actor: Reina Ueda

• First Appearance: Volume 5, Chapter 40

Who Is Reze?

Reze is a fragile-looking girl with an air of mystery. She’s charming, with long bangs and a choker around her neck. Her constant warm smile and gentle personality quickly captured the hearts of many readers.

She works at Café Futamiti, where she becomes close to Denji, who often visits. Reze’s forward, flirtatious attitude toward Denji leaves a strong impression — so much so that even Denji, despite his feelings for Makima, finds himself falling for her.

Reze’s True Identity – A Bomb Devil Hybrid

Though Reze seems genuinely kind and affectionate toward Denji, her true identity is far from innocent.

She is a Weapon Human, just like Denji — someone who has fused with a devil. Her mission is to steal Denji’s heart for her country.

Reze has fused with the Bomb Devil, allowing her to transform by pulling the pin on her choker like a grenade. Once transformed, she unleashes devastating explosions, using bombs and blasts in various creative ways to hunt Denji down.

Her design and abilities are full of symbolism; I explore her inspirations and references in more depth later in this article.

A Soviet Spy with a Tragic Past

As the story unfolds, we learn that Reze has a heartbreaking background.

In the Soviet Union, there is a grim “fairy tale” told by mothers to discipline their children. It speaks of a secret room hidden in a military ammunition depot — filled with orphaned children packed tightly together. These children have no freedom, living and dying only as tools of the state.

Such children, raised only to serve their country as living weapons, were called “guinea pigs.”

Reze was one of them.

Her smiles, her sweet words, even her affection toward Denji — all were part of her mission. She was a spy sent by the Soviet Union to retrieve Denji’s heart. Her exceptional combat skills and physical strength make sense when you realize she was trained from childhood to be a perfect weapon.

For more context on how Soviet elements appear in Reze’s story, I also connect them to her Russian song here:

Reze’s Death – Killed by Makima (Twice)

Reze meets a tragic end in Part 1 of Chainsaw Man.

She is ambushed and killed by Makima and the Angel Devil on her way to see Denji again.

Later, she is resurrected through Makima’s power and becomes a member of Public Safety’s Special Division 5, but she is eventually defeated again in battle against Chainsaw Man.

However, since Weapon Humans are essentially immortal, there’s still a possibility that Reze could return in Part 2.

I explore various return theories and future scenarios in detail here:

Abilities – The Power of the Bomb Devil

Reze can transform into the Bomb Devil by pulling the pin on her neck, much like activating a grenade. As the Bomb Devil, she can create explosions at will, using her body as a weapon.

She can:

• Blow up her limbs to attack

• Release sparks to ignite blasts

• Detach body parts and control them before detonation

Her only known weakness is that she cannot cause explosions underwater.

Reze’s combat power is terrifying — she kills several Public Safety agents and is feared even by the Typhoon Devil, a being of immense power.

Even without transforming, Reze demonstrates deadly hand-to-hand combat skills, strangling an assassin to death with her bare hands. Despite her slender frame, her agility and combat instincts make her one of the deadliest characters in the series.

Inspiration and Symbolism Behind the Reze Arc

In an interview with a Japanese magazine, Chainsaw Man creator Tatsuki Fujimoto revealed that the Reze arc was inspired by the film Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade.

It is also believed that the design and abilities of the Bomb Devil (Bomb Woman) were modeled after Nanao Agawa, a character from the same film.

Toward the end of the arc, Reze receives a red gerbera from a charity donation box.

In the language of flowers, red gerberas symbolize “passion,” “endless challenge,” “positivity,” and “mysterious love.” They are often given to people who are about to take a new step forward in life.

Interestingly, a single gerbera flower also carries the meaning “You are my destined one” or “love at first sight.”

This makes her final scene even more poignant — suggesting that her feelings for Denji may have been more sincere than her mission allowed her to show.

I also connect this symbolism with the café name “Futamichi” and Reze’s “two roads” in this analysis:

Why Didn’t Reze Pull the Pin at the End?

Image Credit :Tatuki Fujimoto 藤本タツキ/Shueisha 集英社・MAPPA

At the very end of her story, Reze hesitates to pull the pin on her neck — the trigger for her Bomb transformation.

While this may partly be due to Makima’s overwhelming presence or interference from the Angel Devil, many readers have offered deeper interpretations:

• She didn’t want to risk hurting Denji and the café master in the blast’s aftermath.

• She may have been tired of living as a weapon and chose not to fight anymore.

• Her feelings for Denji briefly outweighed her orders and mission.

These interpretations highlight the human side of Reze, torn between duty and genuine emotion.

Her inability to pull the pin may symbolize her final act of resistance — the last spark of humanity in someone created to be nothing more than a weapon.

Final Thoughts – Why Reze Is So Loved

From a Japanese fan’s point of view, Reze is such a powerful character because she combines:

• Cute romantic-comedy moments

• Cold political and military themes

• Extreme violence and tragedy

• A bittersweet “what if” love story

She is both a weapon and a girl who wanted a normal life, both an enemy and Denji’s first real love.

That contradiction makes her unforgettable — and it’s why fans around the world continue to talk about her arc long after finishing Part 1.
